Factors to consider:

Efficiency: Every unit is given an efficiency rating, called a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). SEER rating for new central air conditioners ranges from 10 - 16, moving from a 10 to a 16 would save an average Michigan household over $100 per season.

Enviromental Issues: Purontm is an environmentally sound refrigerant designed to protect the earth's ozone layer. Federal law requires all manufacturers phase out ozone depleting refrigerants in the next few years. Purontm is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a replacement from Freon 22

Cooling capacity: (tons) One ton equals 12,000 BTUs/hour-a term derived from the amount of energy required to melt 1 ton of ice in a day.

  • The larger the capacity, the more a unit will cost
  • When an air conditioner that is too small can't keep up with load requirements on a particularly hot day.
  • One that is too large will cycle off and on too frequently, doing a poor job of dehumidifying the air, which degrades comfort.
